It's February 14th, and you're not in a relationship. So what? Celebrate being single this Valentine's Day by remembering why it's easier to be alone.

Festooned in pink ribbons, dripping with champagne and piled with heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, St. Valentine's Day is a holiday for lovers. From mushy love songs on the radio to romantic gifts in every store window, singles find themselves left out in the cold as the world caters to happy couples everywhere in the days leading up to February 14. If you're single this Valentine's Day, don't dwell on the negatives: embrace your singlehood, and remember all the reasons that you're better off alone this holiday.

Being Single on Holidays is Cheaper!

According to Benjamin Franklin, "A penny saved is a penny earned." If that's true, by letting you stay single this Valentine's Day, Cupid has just given you a pile of cash. When you add up the flowers, candy, jewelry and fancy dinners out for a guy, and the new outfit and matching shoes, and nail and hair appointments for a girl, February 14th is worse than April 15th for your bank account! If you're single, you can spend that money on anything you want, or even save it up for future relationship expenses, just in case you happen to be seeing someone when Valentine's Day rolls around next year.

A More Relaxing Valentine's Day

If you're happily single, you'll avoid a lot of the stress that goes along with being in a relationship on the Pinkest and Frilliest holiday of the year.

  • Boyfriend Stress on Valentine's Day – Did you pick the right gift? Will she like it? Did you spend too much? Did you spend too little? If you give her jewelry, will she think it means something?

  • Girlfriend Worries on Valentine's Day – Will you be able to pretend that you didn't figure out what he bought you? Will you be able to pretend that you actually liked the gift, even if you really really didn't? If he gives you jewelry, does that mean he thinks that it means something?

  • Spousal Complaints on Valentine's Day – Will he (or she) figure out that you had a last minute scramble to buy a gift, or at least a card, only after being reminded by co-workers that the wife (or husband) will probably expect something. Will she (or he) still be nagging you about it on the next Valentine's Day?

  • Parental Problems on Valentine's Day – Will you be able to get a sitter? A good sitter? Will you still be able to afford an evening out after paying (and tipping) the sitter? Will you be able to make it through the evening without getting a call from the sitter?
More Fun on February 14 for Singles

If you're single on February 14th this year, resolve to have fun instead of moping around. Count your blessings, gather up some single friends and some of the cash you saved by being unattached, and make this a Valentine's Day to remember.
