Want to save some money? Try out this easy budget spreadsheet, and follow these quick tips to help your family track spending and save cash every month.

In this economy, you need a family budget if you want to avoid financial troubles. Without budgeting and other types of financial planning, impulse spending and debt can increase dramatically. Household expenses can mount, but if you keep track of spending, you can manage the costs of running a home, as well as all other expenditures, without spending too much. A comprehensive budget can improve the financial outlook for many families, but making an effective family budget requires each member of the family to keep track of spending. You can do this by giving everyone his or her own daily budget spreadsheet.

Making a Family Budget

If you're creating a budget for your family expenses, you need to compile information about both spending and income. Identify all sources of income, and include them in the budget. Organize your expenses should be organized by type, including revolving debt payments, rent, utilities, and entertainment. All family members can assist in the process by providing information on spending habits.

Keeping a Daily Budget Spreadsheet

When there is a large disparity between the total monthly income and monthly spending that cannot be explained with routine payments, debts, and other obligations, it is often the result of impulse spending. Impulse spending occurs when you make a purchase that has not been planned for within the budget. While impulse spending may appear minor at the time, even purchases of small dollar amounts can add up over time, and will have an effect on your monthly budget.

Before you attempt to curb impulse spending, keep track of all purchases to demonstrate how much the small purchases accumulate by the end of the month. Encourage all of your family members to keep records of purchases in a daily budget spreadsheet. Kids and teens can carry around a notebook, and jot down money as it is spent as well. The spreadsheet should show the total amount spent by each family member, and can help identify all areas in which excessive funds are being spent.

Household Expense Form

An important aspect of family budget planning is keeping track of the costs associated with running a home. A household expenses worksheet, part of making a family budget, helps to identify areas of higher cost. This allows families to cut back in more expensive areas when it becomes necessary, due to economic changes, changes in income, or an unanticipated need for additional funds. Some areas in which household expenses can be trimmed include purchasing generic items, rather than name-brands, and avoiding the purchase of consumables such as paper plates.
