The concepts of artificial intelligence and singularity combine to create a theory of the potential advances in technology that may occur in the future.

Singularity theory, as it pertains to technology, is often discussed but seldom explained. To understand the concept of artificial intelligence and singularity, you must first understand the terms individually. Read on for an explanation of the current state of AI technology and the theory of singularity as it applies to artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence Programming

Artificial intelligence programming is currently able to simulate human conversation (read about Artificial Intelligence Chat-bots and Computer Assisted Translation for more information about natural language processing technology) and can automate many tasks that have traditionally been accomplished by humans. At this time, however, AI only accomplishes those tasks that are scheduled, and only takes action when told. Although AI algorithms can solve complex equations, artificially intelligent programs, like any other tools, are only extensions of the human programmers who created them and the people who use them.

Singularity Theory

In both astronomy and math, "singularity" refers to a point at which everything changes. At the point of singularity, the region of space or function of an equation no longer follows the normal rules. The theory of technological singularity applies that concept to the evolution of technology. According to this theory, when the point of technological singularity is reached, all bets are off, and computers will take over. In essence, computer programs will advance to the point where they will recreate an technological version of the Cambrian Explosion.

Artificial Intelligence and Singularity Theory

AI technology is simply a tool used by programmers, just as a carpenter might use a hammer. Although no one expects that hammers will spontaneously rise up and take over the construction industry, there are some who believe that artificially intelligent computers will spontaneously achieve consciousness, and spur huge advances in computing technology. This concept is known as technological singularity.

So, what is artificial intelligence and singularity? Technological singularity theory suggests that once any degree of consciousness is achieved by a computer, it will result in swift strides forward in AI technology, culminating in a widespread and vast proliferation of increasingly advanced artificially intelligent beings. There are no indications that AI is on the verge of achieving consciousness, but even if an algorithm does become self-aware, there is no way to predict the results. Technological singularity is an interesting concept, but without actual proof, it remains just another theory.

What is Artificial Intelligence and Singularity?
Betrays lack of understanding of what consciousness is !!consciousness!=bunch of memories. consciousness is more like descartes "Cogito ergo sum"-I think, therefore I am. Assertion of identity(don't confuse with i am computer named xyz) with full force of being = sum of all thinking+feelings+memory+...

There are absolutely no indications that AI is on the verge of achieving consciousness
Let alone consciousness it is hard put to attain the level of a five year old!!

Response to the comment made Jan 13th: Did you actually read the article? She does not define consciousness as a bunch of memories. You are correct in that she didn't trot out Descartes theory of consciousness but I'm guessing that that is because it has been completely discredited by all who research in and write about this field. I am also confused by your last comment. Are you suggesting that five year old children are not conscious?
